Paralympian moves High Court for award

Ranjith Kumar Jayaseelan of Madurai, a paralympian who has represented India at various international events has moved the Madurai Bench of Madras High Court on Thursday seeking a direction to be considered for Dhyan Chand Lifetime Achievement Award 2018 to be held in New Delhi on September 25.

Ranjith Kumar, a para athletic coach now, said that he had participated in various international events from 2002 to 2014 and won several medals for the country. Following his success as an athlete, he was appointed as coach with the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu in Madurai. He said that he was actively involved in shaping the differently abled sportspersons and encouraging them.

He received the President award for his contribution to sports and in 2012 the State government selected him as ‘Best employee under the differently abled category.’ Following this, he submitted his nomination for the Dhyan Chand Award, which honours sportsperson for their lifetime achievement in sports.

He complained that though he was eligible for the award, he was not considered. The case was adjourned for further hearing.
