BENGALURU: A 28-year-old woman arrested for allegedly abetting her chain snatcher husband by disposing of the booty also accompanied him in a theft case registered at Huvina Hadagali police station in Ballari district.
Jnanabharati police said Mahadevi, 28, a resident of Kumbalgodu who’s from Huvina Hadagali, was addicted to a lavish lifestyle and frequently visited malls, apart from travelling to Goa and Kodagu where she stayed at posh resorts.

Mahadevi and Achyuth Kumar, 31, who was shot at by cops on June 17 near Kengeri, used to earn money by committing offences, including chain-snatching and thefts. Mahadevi was arrested on Monday.

Investigation revealed Mahadevi forced her husband to take to chain-snatching whenever she was short of money. Police claimed they had solved 105 cases of chain-snatching in Bengaluru by arresting Kumar; they recovered 3.5kg of gold ornaments worth Rs 1 crore from him. A goldsmith identified as H Gavisiddesh, 33, from Koppal, was also arrested in the case for buying the stolen booty.

Police said Mahadevi not only helped her husband dispose of the booty but also accompanied him in a few cases of theft. One of them was reported in Huvina Hadagali. “The couple visited their relative’s house and stole gold and Rs 3 lakh. Cops found the couple’s Scorpio near Huvina Hadagali and chased them. The duo fled, leaving behind the SUV and booty,” a cop said.

Achyuth was picked up at Jnanabharathi on June 15. The next day when he was being taken for a spot inquest, he attempted to escape. Police shot at and injured Achyuth when he attacked the personnel.
