‘Inter-caste couples can bank on SC/ST panel’

Andhra Pradesh SC, ST Commission Chairman Karem Sivaji on Thursday demanded that the persons who plotted and carried out the killing of Perumalla Pranay Kumar be awarded the death penalty.

Pranay was done to death in a suspected case of honour killing at Miryalaguda in Nalgonda district of Telangana on September 14.

At a press conference here on Thursday, Mr. Sivaji said: “ The Commission appeals to those who decide to go for inter-caste marriage to lodge a complaint at the nearest police station if they sense any threat to their life.’’

The Commission would extend full support to such couples, he added.

He said attacks on SCs and tribal persons had increased since the BJP came to power at the Centre.

Rally in Guntur

Mr. Sivaji said a ‘Constitution protection’ rally would be organised in Guntur on September 22 (Saturday), protesting burning of copies of the Constitution in Delhi recently. Elected representatives belonging to SC/ST communities from across the State had been urged to participate in it.

He received representations on issues pertaining to SCs/STs during a meeting here.

The Commission chief directed Krishna district to submit a report on the status of cases registered under the SC and ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989, within a week.
