Two suspected criminals were shot dead by the Uttar Pradesh police in an alleged encounter in Aligarh on Thursday.

Some of the visuals related to the encounter showing police teams firing towards the suspected criminals were widely shared on social media after local scribes were called to the spot by the police during the operation.

The police, however, did not clarify how the visuals were released.

The incident took place near the Machhua Nagar bridge under the Harduaganj police station when around 6:30 a.m. the police tried to stop two persons on a bike.

SSP Aligarh Ajay Sahni said the two fired at the police team and fled.

“We gave chase and after four kilometres they took shelter in an old building of the irrigation department and continuously fired at the police team from there. In counter firing, two criminals were shot. They were take to a hospital where they were declared dead,” said Mr. Sahni.

Station Officer of Palimukimpur Pradeep Kumar was also injured in the shoot-out, the police said.

The dead suspects were identified as Naushad and Mustaqim. They carried a bounty of ₹25,000.

The two have eight cases of murder, attempt to murder and loot against them, and were wanted in a recent case of murder of two priests.

A .32 bore pistol and a .315 bore countrymade weapon were recovered from the two.
