After facing a rout in the February Assembly elections in Tripura, the Congress on Thursday displayed an impressive show of strength by organising a protest rally against alleged scam in the Rafale fighter jet deal.
Encouraged by the turnout, the party’s State leaders announced the tour schedule of AICC president Rahul Gandhi ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
“Rahul Gandhiji is coming in December. He would address a bigger rally than this,” PCC chief Birajit Sinha said after the rally was intercepted at the Circuit House area.
Hundreds of Congress workers and supporters joined the rally which began from the Congress Bhavan. It had a replica of Rafale jet fitted on the front of a mini-truck.
‘Anti-people policies’
Police and paramilitary troops prevented the rally at Circuit House in Kunjaban area where Congress leaders addressed the gathering. They slammed the “anti-people policies” of the Centre as well as BJP-IPFT coalition government in the State.
All India Youth Congress president Keshav Chandra Yadav, vice-president B.V. Shrinivas and many other party leaders participated in the rally. They claimed that a Congress-led government would be formed at the Centre after the 2019 Lok Sabha polls.
