Following orders of the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court, Principal District Judge A. Nazeema Banu and Chief Judicial Magistrate L. S. Sathiamoorthy inspected the Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple here on Wednesday.
The judicial officers visited the temple to ascertain if basic amenities were in place. They inspected the drinking water and toilet facilities and ascertained if sanitation was maintained. The security and safety measures at the temple were also inspected.
They interacted with devotees and enquired about the health condition of the temple elephant Parvathi.
The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court had directed the district judges in the State to inspect temples for basic amenities. A report has been sought in this regard by September 30.
The court had passed the order while hearing a plea for improvement of basic amenities at the Subramaniaswamy Temple in Tiruchendur. Calling for better maintenance of temples, the court had observed, “The ancient temples in the State are an example of our art and architecture and it is our duty to preserve and maintain them for future generations.”
