BICHOLIM: A 35-year-old pregnant woman from Uttar Pradesh residing at Mayem was seriously injured after a part of the roof of Bicholim’s KTC bus stand fell on her. Her relative, a girl, also
sustained minor injuries while they were waiting for a bus at 5pm.
Rekhadevi, the woman, sustained grievous injuries to her right leg, hand and head. Other commuters at the bus stand helped shift the duo to the
Bicholim primary health centre by a rickshaw, as the 108 ambulance was attending another call.
The girl was discharged after first aid, while the woman was shifted to district hospital, Mapusa.
Sources said the woman had returned from Mapusa after a check-up there, and was heading to Mayem.
Bicholim mamlatdar Pravinvijay Pandit visited the site and directed the managing director of the
KTCL to take necessary action. Pandit said he would meet KTCL officials and local MLA, Rajesh Patnekar, to discuss the new bus stand proposal.
Patnekar said a proposal had been sent to KTCL to demolish the present
structure and build a new one at a cost of Rs 10 crore.
Local councillor Nissar Khan expressed concern about the condition of bus stand, and demanded the KTCL renovate the bus stand soon.
Bicholim block Congress committee president Nazir Beg said, “The state government has failed to construct a new bus stand though the proposal had been passed few years ago.”
“This is a serious issue as it is concerns public safety. The bus stand should be repaired at the earliest,” said local Naresh Kadkade.
