Concerts at the Point opens its 22nd season on Sunday, Sept. 30 with a solo piano concert by Russian pianist Anastasya Terenkova.

Concerts at the Point is a small, volunteer-run organization that presents classical music and classical jazz concerts during the fall and spring. It’s goal is to bring world class music and musicians to the SouthCoast at prices affordable to the larger community, a press release about the concert states.

“This has been possible due to good audience attendance, donations from local foundations as well as contributions from generous audience members, as well as the visiting musicians who love to play for such an audience in such an intimate setting,” the release states. “In addition, administrative costs are relatively low due to devoted volunteers who do so much to keep this South Coast institution thriving.”

Concerts at the Point is pleased to have captured a return visit by Terenkova, which comes just after she has played recitals in Bratislava, Paris, Palermo and New York City in August and September, and before she moves on to a Moscow music festival in early October.

Terenkova’s Westport Point concert will begin with compositions by Chopin, Scarlatti and Liszt. For the second half, she will present Mussorgsky’s “Pictures at an Exhibition,” a lengthy and fiendishly difficult suite for solo piano. The suite consists of musical depictions of 11 paintings by Mussorgsky’s dear friend, Viktor Hartmann, interspersed with a recurring “Promenade” theme that represents a visitor — in this case, the composer himself — strolling through the exhibition.

Concerts are held at 3 p.m. on Sundays at the acoustically splendid Westport Point United Methodist Church, 1912 Main Road, Westport Point. Doors open 2:15 p.m., seating is open. Tickets are $30 for adults and $10 for students.

Tickets may be purchased in advance via PayPal at www.concertsatthepoint.org. Tickets may be reserved by calling 508 636 0698, and paid for at the door by cash or personal check only.
