BENGALURU: The
Karnataka high court on Wednesday said that it expects the BBMP to ensure that
roads of Bengaluru city are free from potholes by Thursday.
"It should be zero potholes by tomorrow. It is your job. How you go about it is up to you" a division bench headed by Chief Justice orally observed.
The bench has no posted the hearing on a PIL filed in 2015 regarding potholes to Thursday for further consideration.
Further, the bench has orally indicated that if the BBMP doesn’t behave properly, then the court has to think about other means.
"Bengaluru has to be put back on its glory from every angle. If you cannot do it, then we would have to take a call. The city cannot be left to anybody’s mercy" the bench added.
The court has noted that potholes issue is just a minor part of a larger problem of traffic issues being faced by the city.
In the PIL filed in 2015, Petitioners Vijayan Menon and others have sought for series of directions, including a direction to the BBMP to place a report on action taken to repair and cover the potholes and also provide a mechanism to enable the citizens to file complaints about the poor conditions of streets.
In addition, they have prayed the court to direct the BBMP to make available the works contracts that will be for construction and maintenance of roads on its websites and also a mechanism with regard to disbursements of compensation to the victims of road accidents resulting from potholes.
