The Cabinet has approved the crowdfunding model mooted by KPMG for reconstruction in flood-hit areas and decided to constitute a mission for implementing and coordinating relief activities.
Briefing reporters about the decisions of a Cabinet meeting here on Wednesday, Industries Minister E.P. Jayarajan said institutions and individuals had come forward to sponsor reconstruction activities and the proposed mission would coordinate such sponsors and channelise their funds for reconstruction.
Sponsorship would be accepted on the basis of norms for the reconstruction and rehabilitation activities. No decision has been made on the structure of the mission or its convener, he said.
Mr. Jayarajan said there was a flow of donations from various sections for the reconstruction activities, including students and pensioners, and hence there was no need for the government to collect funds under coercion. Asked about the moves to petition court against the `salary challenge’ announced by the government, Mr. Jayarajan said the government was not opposed to anyone seeking legal recourse.
