Inadequate facilities in hostel mess has been a constant source of student unrest for the past one year at LU. It also led to violence on few occasions. But LU authorities do not seem to have taken any lesson. They will have to realise that its their legal and moral obligation to provide good and healthy food to students and maintain sanitation and hygiene in the mess. Instead of offering lame excuses, LU must act against those responsible for laxity.
The students went on a rampage, alleging that the complaints filed by them with
university administration have gone unheard. The mess owner called police to control students.
Admitting that there was a
worm in meal,
LU spokesperson Prof N K Pandey said, "The number of insects increases in this season. We have been taking precautions but will be more careful." Students said this was the fifth instance in less than a month when insects have been found in the food served to them.
A worm was found in lunch in central mess on Sunday also while a week ago, inmates of Tilak Girls' hostel had lodged complaint about a worm being found in dinner. Earlier, cockroaches and flies too were found in the food served at central mess.
Students said that whenever they raised the matter, LU authorities assured them that the incident will not recur.
"Over 600 students eat food in the mess and pay for it, but there is no hygiene, no check on quality of food served to us," said a student.
