Senior Congress leader Ajay Maken has offered to step down as the Delhi Congress chief.
Sources close to Mr. Maken told The Hindu that the resignation is based on health reasons. Mr. Maken is out of the country for treatment of back pain and could be away from work for a considerable period of time, the source said.
His resignation, however, has not yet been accepted by Congress president Rahul Gandhi, who had personally hand-picked Mr. Maken to lead Delhi Congress replacing Arvinder Singh Lovely.
After being wiped out by the Aam Admi Party (AAP) in the last Assembly elections, Mr. Maken has been one of the most vocal critics of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.
His possible departure as the head of Delhi Congress comes at a time when there is persistent speculation about a possible Congress-AAP tie up for the seven Lok Sabha seats in Delhi.
