KENDRAPADA: Giri Mandal, a convicted murderer from Jajpur district who was released two years ago on grounds of good conduct, allegedly killed a man in an inebriated state at Sankharidiha village under Dharmasala police station in Jajpur district on Sunday night.
Mandal was set free in 2016 after he had spent 12 years in prison for killing his wife.

In the latest incident, Mandal killed 36-year-old Sanatan Samal in a sudden fit of rage, sources said. He allegedly kicked his belly and landed a few punches on his chest. Following the assault, villagers took Samal to the government hospital at Dharmasala where doctors declared him brought dead.

"The motive behind the murder is yet to be ascertained. We also do not know as to how he was killed. The suspect Mandal was awarded life imprisonment by the district and sessions judge of Jajpur in 2004 for killing his wife Chandi in 2003. On Sunday, the accused had managed to flee the village after committing the murder. But we arrested him from a house at Jaraka the next morning," Umakanta Nayak, inspector in-charge of Dharmasala police station, said.

He has been booked under Section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code. Police have seized the body and sent it to the hospital for post-mortem. "The exact reason of the death will be known after the autopsy report comes, " added the police officer.

Tension gripped Sankharidiha village on Monday with angry residents putting up a blockade at Sankharidiha on national highway 16 by placing the body of the deceased demanding stern action against the accused.
