The Delhi High Court on Monday directed social media major Facebook and search engine Google to remove allegedly derogatory material relating to expelled AIADMK MP Sasikala Pushpa.
A bench of Justice Yogesh Khanna gave the order on a petition moved by Ms. Pushpa claiming that some unknown persons were threatening to tarnish her image by uploading her morphed photos and videos.
The High Court asked Facebook and Google to immediately remove the objectionable materials whose links were provided by Ms. Pushpa. It listed the case for further hearing on January 14 next year.
In 2016, when the plea was first filed, the High Court had restrained Facebook India, Google India, YouTube and Twitter India from publishing or showing any derogatory photographs of the Rajya Sabha MP.
Later, the parent companies of the entities were arraigned as parties in the suit.
Ms. Pushpa had pleaded that irreparable loss was likely to be caused if her rights, interest and reputation were not immediately protected.
The court was hearing a plea by Ms. Pushpa seeking an injunction order against the social media platforms on the ground that they have not made any attempt to verify the authenticity of the photographs before uploading them.
