Two new WA cases as strawberry needle scandal spreads
A Kelmscott family believe they have found a needle inside a punnet of strawberries bought from their local Woolworths, just hours after WA Police revealed a similar case had been reported in York.
Sheana Arcon and her father told 9 News Perth's Elly McCormack they bought the strawberries from Woolworths on Albany Highway in Kelmscott on Monday afternoon.
"My dad told me to just check the strawberries and cut it," 10-year-old Sheana said.
"And as I was cutting the strawberry I noticed something sharp.
"I showed my dad and that’s when he discovered the needle was inside.
“When I saw it I honestly didn’t know what to think. On the news I heard it’s been happening, but I wouldn’t expect it to happen in WA here, so I was really surprised."
Sheana's father, Hermie, told 9 News Perth he had joked about the possibility of finding a needle just moments before his daughter made the discovery.
"It’s scary, you know. Imagine kids – especially my little one, they just grab things sometimes without cutting it," he said.
It's understood the strawberries were packaged north of Perth, and the find has been reported to WA Police.
Detectives were seen to enter the Woolworths store on Monday evening.
The revelation comes hours after WA Police confirmed a member of the public presented at York Police Station on Monday to report he had found a needle in a punnet of strawberries.
The man said he found the needle in his sink after preparing strawberries for his family. He did not recall the needle being in the sink prior to preparing the strawberries.
The strawberries were produced and packaged in Western Australia. Police are conducting inquiries into this matter and liaising with other agencies.
Members of the public are encouraged to be cautious in handling strawberries and report any discoveries to local police, or by calling 131 444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
The Department of Health had advised the public can still purchase and eat locally grown strawberries but, in light of recent events, you should cut them before eating.
