A two-day mosquito source-reduction drive covering educational institutions, offices, houses, establishments, and public places concluded here on Sunday.
District Medical Officer P.P. Preetha said health workers, NSS, NCC, and Student Police Cadets led the source-reduction activities in 1,474 educational institutions on Friday.
Kitchens, provision storage rooms, and wells in the educational institutions were inspected and necessary steps taken to prevent mosquito proliferation, sources said.
Migrant camps
On Saturday, the drive centred round 1,925 government and private institutions and hospitals and 1,864 commercial establishments, and 378 migrant workers’ camps.
Besides source reduction, spraying in 77 places facing waterlogging and release of fingerlings in water in 48 places were taken up, a statement from Dr. Preetha said.
On Sunday, inspections were conducted in 2.62 lakh houses and 139 markets, and over 1.25 lakh sources of mosquito proliferation removed.
Spraying, fogging, and release of fingerlings were the activities taken up by health workers, ASHA and Kudumbasree workers, and volunteers.
In areas under the city Corporation, the source-reduction activities were led by district vector-control units.
Eliminate conditions
The District Medical Officer called upon the public to eliminate conditions conducive to laying of eggs by mosquitoes inside houses and on their premises and in public places to prevent spread of dengue, chikungunya, and malaria.
