The 504-like car, which draws styling cues from the Instinct concept, has been two years in the making

Peugeot will show a concept coupé at next month's Paris motor show, and it has been previewed in a series of images released by the brand.

No details have been given about the car’s powertrain, but some degree of electrification is expected, given the switch to electric mobility across the industry and the concept’s forward-looking themes.

Styling, however, is decidedly retro in its execution, with lines drawing heavily from the 504 coupé of the late 1960s. Peugeot boss Jean-Philippe Imparato said: “When I saw it for real, it made me feel like a child.”

Imparato has previously hinted to Autocar that the car will preview a potential range-topping model, meaning that, unlike other concepts produced by the brand, the coupé could make production.

A more comprehensive image of the car was tweeted from Peugeot’s main Twitter account but has been since taken down.

Even the car’s name is under wraps, as is the majority of its styling, but the image clearly shows the coupé's shape, with wide wheel arches and a two-door bodystyle, as well as details taken from the Instinct shooting brake concept such as the rear lights.

No interior details have been disclosed, but the car could have a cabin based around Peugeot’s i-Cockpit digital dashboard, albeit a next-generation system. A four-seat layout is expected, akin to the RCZ, which halted production in 2015.

Our Verdict

Peugeot RCZ

The RCZ is a classy, interesting, fun coupé that shows Peugeot has got its mojo back

Make it so!

The new 508 is stunning, and Peugeot have form for gorgeous saloon based coupes (504, 406, even the 407 coupe has aged well IMO)

A Car that I’d maybe buy, a Car that doesn’t look like the rest.

Could be really cool, this - PSA's Alpine moment.

The car-buying public gets what it deserves, unfortunately ...

Don't call it retro, call it a car with the latest design trend: lower waistline, slimmer pillars and bigger windows.  Next up: VW makes a Passat inspired by the Ro80.  I can dream.

That is one pretty car!

The passion for motoring is dying thanks to congestion, concerns about the environment, bad drivers / road rage, spiralling costs and the over-reliance on speed cameras as the main method of tackling bad driving. So it's a real tonic to see a mainstream car manufacturer having the guts to create a car to be bought with the heart to inject some much needed enthusiasm back into motoring.

I often have dreams of Ford bringing out a modern-retro two door saloon based on the Escort MK1 Mexico, like BMW did with the Mini, stripped of unnecessary options and weight, with rear wheel drive and the engine from the new Fiesta ST.

Everyone has a right to an opinion - don't confuse that with insulting your mother :-)

You had me right until you mentioned BMW Mini..

A nice car the 504 Coupé !

But the 504 sedan was a great car too.Why not a remake with RWD, NA V6.

Nice. Peugeot do produce vast numbers of concept cars that never make production, so I'm not holding my breath.

In a world of tall and bulky SUVs you'd certainly stand out from the crowd in this!

I look forward to seeing more, but a 508 coupe in line with these teaser shots could be very appealing, with the right mechanicals. i wont hold my breath
