While policemen were on their toes across the city on Sunday to ensure that the Vinayaka idols’ immersion went off peacefully, Muslim residents of Nethaji Nagar at Tondiarpet displayed religious harmony by leading the procession.
In fact, the harmony and the brotherhood in the locality, where over 20,000 Muslim and Hindu families live, dates back to 1964.
“Since 1964, we have been living in harmony. We took part in the construction of a Murugan temple in the area and the Hindus took part in the construction of the mosque,” says Ali Yahya, general secretary, Burma Tamil Muslim Jumma Mosque. “Sometimes, we break coconuts and light camphor if persuaded by our friends,” he adds.
For many years now, the Muslims in the locality have been leading the Vinayaka idol procession in the locality and Hindus and Christians are honoured during their functions.
“The police also play a crucial role in ensuring peace by holding regular interactions with both the communities. This year they did the same,” explained Husur alias Abdul Rehman, joint secretary of the mosque.
The residents want the brotherhood to continue for generations.
“We encourage our children to take part in Hindu and Christian festivals and those from other religions take part in our celebrations, including Iftar,” said Jamal Mohammed, joint secretary of the mosque.
