Two days after the students of (BCKV) gheraoed Vice Chancellor Dharani Dhar Patra for over 24 hours, the university authorities have declared indefinite suspension of classes and ordered the students to vacate the hostels with immediate effect.
Stating the academic activities in the institute were being hampered, the BCKV authorities said in a notice posted on BCKV website on Friday night: "... all the academic activities including all classes shall remain suspended until further notice."
In another notice, the BCKV said: "the Students' Hostels (Boys' and Girls') of the Mohanpur campus of this university shall be closed with effect from 15.09.2018 and all the students residing in the said hostels shall have to vacate their respective hostels simultaneously."
The VC had fallen ill during gherao on September 13 evening and was allowed to leave the chamber by the agitating students.
They had demanded that VC should be back in the office on September 14 and meet them to discuss the issue of taking action against the Dean (Agriculture) Srikanth Das and Dean Students Welfare (DSW) Goutam Chakraborty for some alleged irregularities, a representative of the organisation said.
The students also demanded the VC's resignation blaming him for the alleged attack on them by some outsiders on September 14.
Patra, who did not return to office since September 13, was admitted to a hospital on Saturday as he complained of uneasiness, a family member told reporters.
State Education minister Partha Chatterjee went to the BCKV Hall of the institute Saturday evening and interacted with the faculty and registrar and later with the students.
Chatterjee asked the registrar to take steps for normalising the situation, a university official said.
The students earlier gheraoed the VC for 24 hours in his office on September 7 and blocked a road Wednesday alleging that they were attacked by outsiders inside the campus the previous night.
