The Bandra Kurla Complex police on Friday arrested a history-sheeter for allegedly sexually assaulting a 10-year-old girl and robbing her residence earlier this month. The police said that a near perfect description of the accused by the victim helped them arrest him.
The BKC police said Sher Ali Sheikh (22) was granted bail on September 1 after spending 11 months in jail in a robbery case. “On September 10, Mr. Sheikh broke into the girl’s house when she was alone, bound her at knifepoint and made away with ₹15,000 and gold jewellery, including a chain,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone VIII) Anil Kumbhare said. After he left, the victim started screaming for help. Neighbours rushed to her aid and informed her parents, who rushed back home. On September 11, they took her to the BKC police station, and she revealed that she had also been sexually assaulted.
“She told us the man was cross-eyed. She also mentioned the gold chain he had stolen,” Mr. Kumbhare said.
The police drew up a list of history-sheeters matching the description and zeroed in on Mr. Sheikh. Several informants told the police they had seen a cross-eyed man wearing a gold chain in Bharat Nagar, in Bandra (East). Mr. Sheikh was picked up from the area on Friday morning. The police found the chain on him, and are looking for the rest of the stolen goods.
He has been charged with rape, robbery, house trespass and wrongful restraint under the Indian Penal Code and under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act.
