The Nerul police are on the lookout for a cab driver who allegedly raped a 19-year-old domestic help after promising to marry her. The police said that the accused, Vijaykumar Chaturvedi, has been absconding after the victim registered a case against him on Thursday.

The police said that the accused met the girl a year ago at a common friend’s function. The girl hailed from Chhattisgarh and came to Navi Mumbai in search of work.

Police Inspector Bhaguji Auti said, “At the function, the accused promised to find a job for the girl and took her mobile number. He started sending messages to her and promised to marry her. The accused then took her to his house in Sector 20 to meet his parents. The parents told her that they were fine with the alliance.” The police said that the accused then forced her to have sex with him.

Mr. Auti said, “When the girl insisted on getting married, the accused blocked her number. She approached us when she learnt that the people who claimed to be his parents were actually imposters.” The police said that the accused had gone missing after switching off his cell phone. He has been booked under Sections 376 (rape) and 420 (cheating) of the Indian Penal Code.
