SOMERSET — Visiting GNB Voc-Tech struck first, but Somerset Berkley answered with 42 straight points in a convincing 42-12 football victory over the Bears on Friday night.

Quarterback Jake Meehan threw four touchdown passes and ran for another score as the Raiders shined on both sides of the ball in improving to 2-0. Meehan also had an interception on defense.

Voc-Tech dropped to 0-2.

After Voc-Tech quarterback Ethan Almeida connected with Dana Haywood on a 74-yard touchdown pass on the game's first series, Meehan and the offense went to work, scoring on three straight possessions in taking a 21-6 halftime lead.

Meehan hit Brandon Medeiros on a 10-yard scoring pass before rushing for the two points to put SB in front 8-6.

Meehan then hit Michael Gagliardi on touchdown passes of 30 and 33 yards on carbon-copy plays in consecutive series.

"We saw something there," said SB coach Nick Freitas on running the same play. "A lot of teams like to pack the box on us. We were just trying to figure out different ways to get our offense working."

The Raiders went right to work in the second half, scoring on their first two drives. Meehan ran in from five yards out and then hit Robert Shaker on a 27-yard pass to make it 35-6 with 5:53 left in the third quarter. Medeiros booted both extra points.

The Raiders struck again when Ethan Robidoux pounced on a fumble in the end zone to help extend the lead to 42-6.

Heiser Cacho added a Voc-Tech score on a 48-yard run with 4:34 to play to account for the final margin.

Almeida, despite being picked off three times (two tipped), was impressive for the Bears under center, moving his team downfield by throwing for 189 yards in the first half alone.

"He's the real deal," said Freitas of Almeida.

"I think our offensive line stepped up tonight. We played well. We have a few things we have to clean up, but I think I'm most excited about the play of our line tonight."
