Items worth ₹60 lakh recovered

A domestic help was arrested for theft at her owner’s house in south-east Delhi’s Jasola Vihar, the police said on Friday. They have recovered diamond and gold jewellery worth ₹60 lakh.

On September 9, a woman lodged a complaint at Sarita Vihar police station stating that her domestic help Manju had stolen jewellery from her house. Manju was employed a month ago, the victim said. The accused came to work till September 6 and stopped coming without informing the employer. The complainant had realised that some of her gold and diamond jewellery was missing from the almirah. Following this, she lodged an FIR.

During investigation, it was found that no police verification of the domestic help was done by the employer. She was unable to provide the accused’s mobile number, photograph or address. On Tuesday, the accused was nabbed from Durga Mandir Chowk in Jasola Village.

Manju told the police that the stolen jewellery was at her house in Jasola Vihar.

‘Arrested thrice’

Manju revealed that she had been arrested thrice in New Friends Colony, Sarita Vihar and Paharganj for theft. Her husband was arrested thrice for theft, the police said. “Manju used to look for targets in colonies and society flats. She would approach targets who lived alone and quote a lower salary than other domestic helps to tempt the victims into employing her. After getting entry into the house, she would steal jewellery and run away,” said DCP (South-East) Chinmoy Biswal. She did not keep a mobile phone fearing arrest and changed her address after each incident.
