PMK founder S. Ramadoss on Friday charged that the State government and the Chennai Corporation were lax in desilting stormwater drains in Chennai and this would lead to floods during the monsoon.
In a statement, Mr. Ramadoss slammed the civic agency for not having completed the desilting work.
“Nearly 1,850 kms of stormwater drains under the Chennai Corporation’s limits have to be desilted and maintained. But no work has happened on more than half of it,” he alleged.
cconstruction was being carried out only now, he added. “Wherever one travels in Chennai, one can see roads being dug up for carrying out stormwater drain construction, over every single kilometre. Even though corporation officials claim the work will be over before the monsoon, realistically it doesn’t seem possible,” he said.
The government and the Corporation must also take steps to get rid of encroachments from water bodies and canals so that the city does not see a repeat of the 2015 floods, he added.
