Armed man shot by police at service station in Queanbeyan: police
A man is in hospital in a serious but stable condition after being shot in the hip by police at a service station just outside of Canberra in the early hours of Saturday morning.
Police responded to multiple reports of a man firing shots at passing vehicles on Queanbeyan's main thoroughfare, Monaro Street, at about 4am.
Monaro Police District officers established a perimeter and confronted a man at a BP service station on Lowe Street.
"After a number of shots were allegedly fired towards officers, the man was shot by police," a NSW Police spokesman said in a statement.
The man, a middle-aged resident of the town, was taken to Canberra Hospital.
No police or members of the public were injured.
At about 10am on Saturday morning, a shotgun was still laying on the footpath of Lowe Street, outside St Gregory's Parish church. A pool of blood was visible nearby.
Blocks away from where the man was shot by police, an unmarked police car remained in the middle of Crawford Street outside the Royal Hotel with a punctured front tyre and damage to the side of the vehicle. Shotgun shells were strewn near the vehicle.
More shells were visible outside the barber shop on Crawford Street.
"A Critical Incident Team will now investigate all circumstances surrounding the incident, including the discharge of a police firearm," a NSW Police spokesman said.
"That investigation will be subject to independent review."
Some of the streets surrounding the scene remain blocked off.
The shooting occurred across the road in front of a Catholic church.
Police are urging any witnesses to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
More to come.
