Action taken for administrative and security reasons

Prisoners who showed off their “luxurious life” inside the Central prison were shifted to other prisons in the State.

Three convicts — Mohammed Rafique, Mohamed Ibrahim alias Raja, Mohamed Rikas and two remand prisoners, Mohamed Zahir, Raffiq alias Noorudeen, — were ordered to be transferred to Central prisons in Coimbatore, Salem, Palayamkottai and Tiruchi, prison officials said.

They were shifted out immediately for administrative and security reasons, the officials said.

The transfer of the prisoners comes after photographs were leaked out following seizure of mobile phones from them, which were handed over to local police.

On Saturday, C.Ve. Shanmugam, Minister for Law, Courts and Prisons, held a meeting with top officials of Prison Department and reviewed the security arrangements.

“No extra facility was provided to the prisoners. We provided whatever was stipulated in the Tamil Nadu Prison Manual. ‘A’ class prisoners are entitled to their own clothing at their own cost during non-working hours,” an official said.

The Prison Department is contemplating a strong action against the prisoners who were found using mobile phones and other contraband.
