Large waves and strong wind from Hurricane Florence reached Virginia Beach, Virginia on Thursday. As of 11 p.m., EDT (0300g) Florence was centered about 85 miles (135 kilometers) east-southeast of Wilmington North Carolina, its forward movement slowed to 5 mph (7 kph). Hurricane-force winds extended 80 miles (130 kilometers) from its center, and tropical-storm-force winds up to 195 miles (315 kilometers). Once a Category 4 hurricane with winds of 140 mph (225 kph), the hurricane was downgraded to a Category 1 on Thursday night.
