Isro spy case: Congress leader Padmaja threatens to divulge conspirator's names before judicial panel

THRISSUR: Padmaja Venugopal, Congress leader and daughter of the departed party veteran K Karunakaran, on Friday alleged that a larger political conspiracy had taken place in whipping up the Isro espionage case.

Responding to questions from the reporters here, Padmaja asserts that five 'active politicians' were behind the conspiracy and she will disclose their names before the judicial committee announced by the Supreme Court, if she is given an opportunity.

Despite repeated questions, she declined to divulge the name of those politicians, and asserted that she will disclose this only to the judicial commission.

Padmaja pointed out that her father had to pay a heavy price for the case. "Karunakaran lost his positions in the government and party, but above all he was pained till the end that he had to face the allegation of being an anti-national. He was a deeply patriotic person and had entered politics through the freedom movement," Padmaja recalled.

She said the three Kerala police officials, against whom the Supreme Court has ordered an enquiry for their alleged role in the fabrication of the spy case, alone cannot be responsible for the whipping up of the case. "There was no reason for these three officials to develop an enmity towards K Karunakaran or Nambi Narayanan. They were simply acting as per the directive of others,'' Padmaja said.

She said the Congress party also has responsibility to expose the persons who were responsible for whipping up the Isro spy scandal and for targeting Karunakaran. "Karunakaran was persons who dedicated his life to the party, and now that the Supreme Court order has exposed that the spy scandal was only a fabricated case, the party should find out the persons who had conspired in the case and what was their motive," Padmaja said.

Expressing happiness over the Supreme Court order, Padmaja said, "This was another example justifying the saying that the truth will come out, though there can be delays. My father always used to say that we must respect the judiciary, and the Supreme Court verdict has reinforced out faith in judiciary," she said.
