New BMW M2 Competition Is Faster, Sharper And Probably The Best Small Sports Car Right Now

The current BMW M2 has been described by many as the perfect compact sports car and the new Competition version that essentially replaces it, wants not only to retain that image but also offer more in every area.

The most significant change over the standard M2 hides under the bonnet; gone is the single-turbo engine, because it’s now replaced by the twin-turbo unit found in the M3/M4, complete with the characteristic boomerang-shaped brace.

The M3 engine is slightly detuned, down to 404hp instead of the 425hp while torque is rated at 405lb-ft, available from just 2,350rpm. And yes, the six-speed manual gearbox is still fitted as standard and a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic being an option.

The new BMW M2 Competition also features additional cooling, a revised steering column, an upgraded M Differential, a new exhaust, updated suspension, bigger steel brakes and the list goes on. The rear axle also features stiffer joints which, in combination with the front brace, make the M2 Competition more alert and precise.

BMW claims a 0-62mph (100km/h) in 4.4 seconds, while the top speed is limited to 155mph (250km/h). Tick the right option however and the M2 Competition will not stop until it hits 174mph (280km/h).

In theory, all the revisions should help create an even sweeter, sharper sports car, one that can easily alarm rivals like the Porsche 718 Cayman. But is the BMW M2 Competition that car? Let’s see what Autocar has to say about it on the video linked below.
