Rail services on the Ernakulam- Kayamkulam stretch via Kottayam were disrupted for more than two hours after fire broke out in a goods train carrying petroleum products. There were no casualties as the Fire and Rescue Services swung into action in time . The incident occurred at 1.30 p.m. on Friday.
According to the Fire and Rescue Services, they found that at least six tankers had leakages or were overflowing and the fire was caused by the sparks from the power line above. The train was detained at Muttambalam, near Kottayam, to put out the fire. The train was later moved to Chingavanom where representatives of the Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) and Railways inspected the train. Authorities said the train had filled petrol, diesel and kerosene from the IOC plant at Irumbanam and was moving to Thiruvananthapuram.
