Super Typhoon Mangkhut battered the northern Philippines, Saturday morning… making landfall with the power of a Category 5 hurricane.

That intensity - a reminder of 2013's Typhoon Haiyan which killed 6,000 people.

Tens of thousands of people have so far been evacuated from coastal areas.

The capital of Manila is also under severe storm warning - before the forceful typhoon heads west into the South China Sea, toward Hong Kong.

Meteorologists say the typhoon's peak winds are stronger than those of now tropical storm Florence, which has left several people dead and more than 600,000 homes and businesses without power on the U.S. east coast.
