‘Saaral vizha’ would be organised at Suruli falls on September 23 and 24, said Collector M. Pallavi Baldev here on Friday.

Speaking at a meeting organised to discuss the arrangements with officials from Revenue, Tourism Development, Fire and Rescue Services, Police, Rural Development and Public Works Departments, the Collector suggested conducting special events and competitions for students and general public visiting the falls on the two days.

It was also decided at the meeting to encourage school and college students to write on topics such as the need to preserve environment and conserving water. The best essays would be awarded prizes.

The officials said the Collector ordered that repair works should be carried out at Suruli falls, where infrastructure facilities were damaged during south-west monsoon. Electric lights would be installed along the roads leading to the falls and Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation would run special services from Uthamapalayam and Cumbum.

Sources said ‘Saaral vizha’ was being organised after nearly five years and the district administration had planned some programmes to educate visitors on keeping the surroundings, especially places like Suruli falls, clean and green. During summer, people from various places such as Tirunelveli, Virudhunagar, Thoothukudi and Madurai thronged the falls.

The police would be monitoring the area and take severe action against those consuming liquor or indulging in any illegal activities.

Various government agencies would put up stalls highlighting their achievements and welfare schemes implemented for the people during the two-day festival.

District Revenue Officer S. Kandasami, Project Officer (DRDA) P. Thilakavathi, Joint Director of Health Services M. Saraswathi and others were present.
