THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Various organizations of government contractors and builders are crying foul over the move to give contract of repair works of flood-hit roads to big companies 'as advised by consultant KPMG'. It is 'impractical' and would bring in 'a huge financial liability for the state government', they said.

The organizations also urged the government to guard against 'a large-scale corruption which could be facilitated by the consultancy and big corporates after surpassing tendering procedures'.

"KPMG had recommended to tender repair works and renovation of roads in each assembly constituency as separate work and to entrust the works with big companies. The recommendation is not practical and would burden the state government with huge financial liability," said a joint statement from Builders Association of India, All Kerala Government Contractors Association, Kerala Government Contractors Association and Kerala Government Contractors Federation.

Urgent measures have to be taken to remove obstacles and turn these roads damaged in rain related calamities motorable, the statement said. "All machineries for restoring traffic are available in Kerala. The contractors are ready to complete works on a war footing. Avoiding contractors with local experience to entrust companies which are no way connected to our state will not yield expected results," it said.

The contractors also blamed failure in ensuring maintenance woks in time for destruction of several of the roads. "The government should prepare the design and estimate for these large or medium works and award them to suitable contractors through e-tendering, instead of falling for the conspiracy by the consultancy and big companies for facilitating corruption," the statement added.
