CHANDIGARH: Hours after an auto-rickshaw driver alleged that he lost his wallet to
snatchers in Sector 43 on Tuesday, police here arrested two men and recovered the stolen valuable from them, said an official on Wednesday.
Dhanas resident Ravinder Kumar and Sector 52 resident Sarabjit Singh, said police, were arrested from near the spot where they carried out the crime. While the snatching took place in the wee hours, the accused were arrested by the evening, the official added.
The complainant, Sector 38-West resident Ravinder Kumar, had informed the police about the identity of one of the accused and this helped the police crack the case. The accused were produced in court on Wednesday and remanded in two-day police custody as the cops wanted to ascertain if they were involved in any other snatchings in the city.
In his complaint, Ravinder had alleged that he was waiting for passengers near the outer gate of the Sector 43 bus stand when the accused approached. He alleged that the duo got into argument with him for no reason and then started assaulting him. In the middle of all this, one of the two accused snatched Ravinder’s wallet, which contained Rs 1,100, an Aadhaar card, and a PAN card.
Following the incident, Ravinder called the cops and submitted a complaint to the police. As he had given a description of the accused to the police, the cops tracked the accused down by the evening. Incidents of snatching have gone on unabated in Chandigarh in recent past.
In the past 10 days, nine cases of snatching have been reported in the city. So far this year, police have registered 143 cases of snatchings and claimed to have solved 84 of them.
