The New York Fashion Week pieces we'd love Meghan to wear in Australia

New York Fashion Week is like the Sizzler buffet for stylists and celebrities, a veritable all-you-can-eat snack bar of red carpet looks they can pilfer throughout the next six months before they go on sale to the public.

But what if you're a duchess – or, say, a royal who used to be an actress – and you now have to buy all of your clothes?

Well, you can indulge in a little fantasy. And so, based on the recently released itinerary of Meghan and Harry's Australian tour next month, here are the fashion week outfits we'd love to see in Meghan's Samsonite (but, alas, probably won't).

Day 1: Sydney

For her arrival outfit, Meghan needs something from which she can descend from a British Airways jet without risking a wardrobe malfunction. Given her favourite US designers are Brandon Maxwell – creator of that yellow dress – and Veronica Beard, it's hard to decide but we will settle on this suit. After all, we know the duchess likes a good pant look to shake things up at the palace.

Day 2: Dubbo

No visit to the Western Plains Zoo would be complete without a safari suit, like this one from Tory Burch.

Day 3: Melbourne

Why fight the stereotype? Black it is. Bonus points for making it a jacket dress by an Australian designer.

Day 4: Sydney

There's nothing more Sydney than Zimmermann, and given Meghan is probably starting to feel the effects of jet lag about now, we've packed her a comfy tracksuit.

Day 5: Sydney

Time to roll out the big guns for a state dinner with Scott Morrison at Kirribilli. There is no other option for a duchess but Oscar De La Renta.

Day 6: Fraser Island

The most Moana of the collections belonged to Anna Sui, so it's naturally there where Meghan should find inspiration for the couple's trip to the island. Although getting in and out of a 4WD in some of these frocks may prove a challenge. And of course Meghan will be needing the accessory of the summer: the bucket hat.

And then of course, should the royal tour result in a royal baby – oh please, please let that be the case – then there is only one outfit for Meghan to wear to announce the impending birth: this red Brandon Maxwell number, as worn by Lily Aldridge, who's five months pregnant, on the catwalk.
