SURAT: An 18-year-old ITI student Mihir Bharat Patel’s heart, who was declared brain-dead, travelled 1,158km distance in 117 minutes from Surat and transplanted into Govind Mehra (32), a native of Noida in Uttar Pradesh, at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi on Thursday.

A green corridor was formed to facilitate transport of Mihir’s heart for transplant into Mehra’s body, whose valve of the heart had to be changed in 2012. He required a new heart because its pumping capacity had reduced to just 15%, sources said. This was 19th donation of heart to a recipient from Surat in past 30 months.

A truck had hit Mihir’s motorcycle on Hajira Road on September 10 on Hajira road. He was rushed to Sunshine Global Hospitals. He had a clot in his brain and was declared brain-dead on September 12.

Doctors of Institute of Kidney Diseases and Research Centre harvested Mihir’s kidneys and liver. A doctor from AIIMS, New Delhi harvested the heart and transplanted it into Mehra within hours. Dr Praful Shiroya of Lokdrashti Eye Bank accepted the donation of eyes.
