A Delhi Police Sub-Inspector and a constable have been suspended for allegedly thrashing a man who was held by them from a night club of a five-star hotel in Barakhamba Road, the police said on Wednesday.
The policemen, who also threatened to book the man under IPC Section 377, were found guilty in Vigilance Department probe.
“The policemen are posted at Barakhamba Road police station. They have been suspended on behavioural grounds. Prima facie, they were found at fault. They did not follow standard procedure to handle the situation,” said a police officer.
The complainant, a lawyer by profession, stated in his complaint that the incident had happened on September 1, when he had gone for a party at the hotel with his friend. The friend left the place without informing him. He was searching for him when a youth approached him. The man started a conversation and even offered him a drink.
Complainant’s allegations
“I felt a bit uncomfortable with the conversation. I was about to leave, when the man started shouting at me and alleged that I had tried to sexually assault him. I was shocked, but I preferred to leave the premises. The man, however, followed me outside and made a PCR call claiming that I had sexually assaulted him. I tried to speak to the policemen on duty, but they misbehaved with me. I was dragged to the police station,” said the complainant.
The complainant was allegedly abused and thrashed at the police station. A Sub-Inspector, who was in plain clothes, punched him on his face. He said they threatened to book him under IPC Section of unnatural sex and to ruin his career. “My phone was also taken away. I was not allowed to speak to anyone. The policeman did not even take me for a medical examination even after I made several requests,” the complainant said.
He was detained for the entire night. The policemen took him to RML Hospital the next morning for a check-up but refused allow him get an MLC. He was warned and allowed to leave. “I was in a state of shock as I was beaten up. I was bedridden for a few days. Then I decided to reach out to senior officers for an enquiry,” he also said.
The case was referred to the Vigilance unit of the Delhi Police.
The complainant also moved a court, after which the policemen were suspended.
