DUSU Election Results LIVE: NSUI Leads Presidential Race, ABVP Ahead in Other Seats

DUSU Election Results Live: The results for Delhi University Students' Union (DUSU) polls which were held on Wednesday will be announced today. The counting has started. NSUI is leading on the presidential seat, while ABVP stands ahead for other three seats, according to latest reports. 44.46% voter turnout was recorded till 7:30 pm on Wednesday. This is the highest turnout in 11 years. The polls went off peacefully on Wednesday, despite some last-minute attempts to woo voters.Polling took place at 52 centres in the colleges, where as many as 1.35 lakh voters have been involved in deciding the fate of 23 candidates in the DUSU polls. Senior faculty members were deployed as observers across the centres and around 700 electronic voting machines (EVMs) had been installed, an official said. In the fray are the candidates of the NSUI, ABVP and the AAP's student wing, Chhatra Yuva Sangharsh Samiti (CYSS) -- which is contesting the polls in alliance with left-wing students' outfit All India Students Association (AISA). In the morning colleges, polling began at 8.30 am and ended at 1 pm. In the evening colleges, polling was held between 3-7.30 pm.

ABVP's "One Course, One Fees"  |  The RSS-affiliate Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) has promised to fight for 'same fee for same course' throughout the university and for increasing the scholarship amount meant for weaker sections, if it wins the DUSU elections 2018. "One Course One Fees: ABVP will make sure that same fee is charged throughout the university for a particular course... we would work for the increment in scholarship for SC/ST/OBC and demand to link the scholarship with price index, in line with increase in DA (Dearness Allowance)," its manifesto, which was released last week, read. It promised strict enforcement of 'Room Rent Control Act' and formation of a coordination committee of private hostel owners and landlords, to prevent exploitation of outstation students.

"Everything remained peaceful in the first round of voting. There was no incident of any EVM glitch anywhere," Chief Election Officer Vijay Kaul told IANS.  In all, over 450 Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) were used for colleges in both campuses for students to cast their ballot amid heavy security.

The Delhi High Court on Wednesday was informed that political leaders are involved in the defacement of public property during the Delhi University Students Union (DUSU) elections. The court was hearing a public interest litigation by advocate Prashant Manchanda, seeking a complete ban on the defacement of public property and also direction to the civic agencies to impose heavy fines on political parties and aspiring candidates in order to prevent further defacement of property. Manchanda told a bench of Chief Justice Rajendra Menon and Justice V. Kameswar Rao that littering of pamphlets, pasting of posters and spray painting of walls occurred this year as well in violation of court orders.The bench directed the police, the municipal bodies and Delhi University to file reports indicating the extent of defacement, the steps that were taken to prevent it and action taken against each candidate who violated the law. The court has earlier directed the Centre, Delhi University and the city police to ensure no defacement of public property takes place during the DUSU elections.

After the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) came to power in Delhi in February 2015, its students’ wing had unsuccessfully contested the DUSU polls. It had promised to ensure installation of CCTV cameras, setting up of police booths on campus, ending the "culture of hooliganism" and opposing commercialisation of education.Chhatra Yuva Sangharsh Samiti (CYSS), the student wing of Aam Admi Party (AAP),has allied with the left-wing All India Students' Association (AISA).

The counting for to decide the fate of the 23 contesting candidates has begun, the Indian Express reported.  With 1.35 lakh students voting yesterday, the turnout stood at 44.46%. The rigorous election campaigning witnessed  instances of scuffle between parties. The polls become important in view of Lok Sabha elections next year.

The NSUI has accused ABVP of indulging in violence and terrorising students in Zakir Hussain College. NSUI, in a statement, said that ABVP's vice-presidential candidate on Tuesday entered the campus and went on a rampage with hockey sticks and blades. NSUI demanded cancellation of nomination of ABVP's vice-presidential candidate for the vandalism. "This is not an isolated incident. ABVP has led similar violent attacks against students, faculty and staff in Deshbandhu
College, Laxmibai College, Kirori Mal College and Shraddhanand College since campaigning for DUSU elections began." NSUI said.

The Delhi High Court had directed the Central government, Delhi University and the city police in July  to ensure no defacement of public property during the upcoming Delhi University Students Union (DUSU) elections. The court direction's came when it was informed that the DUSU elections were likely to be held in September.

The women representation in DUSU elections continues to be low. Out of the 23 candidates, only five are women. Preeti Chauhan of The Indian National Students' Organisation is the only woman nominated for the post of DUSU president this year.

The RSS-affiliated party won in various colleges, including Hindu College, Shri Ram College of Commerce, Kirori Mal College, Bhagat Singh (Morning), Zakir Hussain (Morning), Dyal Singh (morning) colleges in Wednesday's poll. The National Students' Union Of India (NSUI) won 75 seats in 20 colleges. They won in Sri Venkateswara College, Atma Ram Sanatan Dharma College, Aryabhatta College, Zakir Hussain College, among others.

As Delhi University went to ballots on Wednesday, issues like women safety, 24X7 access to libraries, among others weighed on the minds of the voters in DU.   Shubham Chaudhary, a second-year law student, said students do not vote for parties, rather they vote on the basis of the candidates' reputation and what work he or she has done.Prakhar Yadav, a student of BA (Hons) Hindi at Hansraj College, said, "There should be no use of muscle power and students should have access to their elected representatives. The parties had promised to get new hostels for students, but no new hostels have been constructed till now."
Yadav also pitched for a cleaner and safer South Campus of the Delhi University for women students, from where some untoward incidents have been reported.

As India readies for the Lok sabha polls next year, the DUSU poll results become important. The results have been preview of Lok Sabha elections in the subsequent year, on at least five occassions, according to India Today. The previous instances have correctly pointed towards the Lok Sabha election results, making the student union polls important for leadership of BJP and Congress.

The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) has won 71 seats in 19 colleges. The voting resumed after the data was keyed-in. The Aurobindo College witnessed a turnout of 44.72 per cent, Hansraj 50 per cent, Deshbandhu College 44 per cent and Aditi Mahavidyalaya 48 per cent.

While the National Students' Union of India (NSUI) has promised the ‘Institute of Eminence’ tag for Delhi University and ‘thalis’ for Rs 10, the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) has promised to spend 50 percent of the union's budget on women and social justice-related activities, along with a special attention to promoting sports and installing sanitary pad vending machines on college campuses.

The run-up to this election, seen as a small-scale preview to major Assembly elections and the 2019 battle, has not been without controversy. On September 6, a group of boys associated with the RSS-backed Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) clashed among themselves over campaigning for DUSU elections 2018. Sources said the two groups thrashed each other with sticks and used knives. At least five boys were injured.

This is not the first time that AAP-sponsored CYSS has entered the polls. Soon after the party's victory in 2015 assembly elections, they had independently contested all the four DUSU seats and, to the embarrassment of the party leadership, their efforts had come a cropper.

Party members making a last-minute pitch to students, excited first-time voters and heavy police presence set the ambience on the Delhi University Students' Union polls on Wednesday. Over 1,200 police personnel were posted across North and South Campus areas to ensure no untoward incident was reported. Around 11 members of different parties, who were seen canvassing, were warned by the patrolling police personnel.

Heavy Deployment | Polling on Wednesday was conducted amid heavy security cover, with around 700 personnel stationed in the north campus and over 500 personnel deployed in the south campus. A person wearing a question mark sign was detained by police outside the Ramjas College, but after it was found he had a college ID card, he was let off. Some members of parties, who were seen canvassing for votes, were warned by the police personnel. Overall, the polling day was peaceful.

Highest Turnout in 11 Years | At 44.46% turnout, this year;s polls across Delhi university saw highest number of voters in 11 years. Last year, the voter turnout was recorded to be 42.8%. The parties in fray this time are NSUI, ABVP and the AAP's student wing, Chhatra Yuva Sangharsh Samiti (CYSS).
