LUDHIANA: For promoting the kitchen garden concept among residents, the Punjab Horticulture Department has developed a low-priced special vegetable seeds kit — containing the seeds of all vegetables grown in winter — which was launched by assistant deputy commissioner Dr Shena Aggarwal on Wednesday. Deputy director (Horticulture) Jagdev Singh, assistant project officer Avtar Singh, and other officials were present on the occasion.
Giving more information, Dr Aggarwal said: “This kit contains seeds of vegetables like carrot, radish, turnip, peas, spinach, fenugreek, coriander, broccoli, beetroot, lettuce, sarson, etc, all of which can be easily grown on a six-marla land. If these vegetables are grown in a planned manner, they can provide 400kg of fresh vegetables for a family of seven. With the help of this kit, residents can get vegetables for a period of six months. The kit has been prepared by the horticulture department under Mission Tandrust Punjab of the state government. The price of the kit has been fixed at Rs80, so that everyone can afford it, and grow fresh vegetables. Along with the seeds, the kit also includes a pamphlet containing details of ways to manage the crops.”

The ADC also said there was a need for every person to stay healthy, for which they should consume a balanced diet. She said vegetables grown using this kit were not only fresh, but also free of pesticides. It also saved around Rs5,000 per person in expenses for vegetables.

Deputy director Jagdev Singh said the horticulture department Punjab had sent around 3,000 such kits for sale in Ludhiana district, and these could be purchased from the department’s main office or block-level offices. He said the kit was much cheaper than the seeds available in the market.
