Benni ahead of Chiefs clash: We are giant-slayers

2018-09-13 18:06

Cape Town - Cape Town City head coach Benni McCarthy is confident that his "11 hungry lions" will rise to the occasion when a wounded Kaizer Chiefs visits the Mother City on Saturday as the Absa Premiership resumes.

The Woza Nazo showdown takes place at Cape Town Stadium with Amakhosi yet to register a win this season.

However, McCarthy's Citizens, who are eighth on the Premiership log with a game in hand, secured an MTN8 final berth for the second year running - against SuperSport United - after beating Mamelodi Sundowns in the semi-final before the international break.

Already under immense pressure, Amakhosi coach Giovanni Solinas will be eager to get his first win in the Premiership after Chiefs crashed out in the first round of the MTN8.

The Soweto giants have strengthened their squad during the off-season, with the acquisitions of Khama Billiat, Lebogang Manyama and Andriamirado Andrianarimanana, but have been under-performing since the Italian took over from Steve Komphela.

Meanwhile, a victory for City against the Glamour Boys could see McCarthy's charges break into the top four.

"We have 11 hungry lions that want to eat and there is a wounded animal on the other side‚" McCarthy said on Thursday at a press conference ahead of the mouth-watering clash.

"We back ourselves‚ we respect them for what they have done in the past. But they have 11 players and so do we.

"Chiefs is always one of the biggest teams in our Absa Premiership‚ whether they have good or bad moments. They have the majority of fans.

"We like to say we are the Davids (versus Goliath) when we go up against Orlando Pirates‚ Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns. But people don’t look at us anymore as the David‚ we are giant-slayers."

Kick-off is at 15:00.
