The Punjab and Haryana High court Thursday stayed the proceedings against former Moga SSP Charanjit Singh and two other policemen in connection with the Justice Ranjit Singh Commission findings on sacrilege incidents.
"The court has stayed the consequential proceedings arising out of the recommendations of the commission," said advocate Santpal Singh Sidhu.
Sidhu is the counsel for petitioners former Moga SSP Charanjit Singh, SSP Raghbir Singh and SHO Amarjit Singh.
The petitioners Wednesday moved the high court against the Justice (retd) Ranjit Singh Commission recommendations on sacrilege incidents.
The one-man commission, the report of which was tabled at the floor of the House during the ongoing Vidhan Sabha session last month, had held the police responsible for using force at Kotkapura and Behbal Kalan, while describing it as "unprovoked, unwarranted and uncalled."
The counsel said the petitioners challenged the commission report on "technical grounds".
"Among the grounds, the commission did not issue any notice to the affected party for giving an opportunity to cross examine the witness. Moreover, no notification was issued to cease the earlier commission (Zora Singh commission) before forming the Ranjit Singh Commission," the counsel said.
Notably, the Punjab government had added the names of four police personnel - former Moga SSP Charanjit Singh, SP Bikramjit Singh, Inspector Pardip Singh and SHO Amarjit Singh in the FIR registered at Baja Khana police station in Faridkot under relevant sections, including 302 (murder) and 307 (attempt to murder).
Their names were added in the FIR on the recommendation of the commission report in connection with police firing incident at Behbal Kalan in Faridkot in 2015 in which two persons were killed.
