KOLKATA: A 45-year-old woman was trampled to death by a herd of elephants in West Bengal's Midnapore city on Tuesday.

The incident took place at a time when the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) has organised a two-day seminar on the 'Co-existence of Humans and Elephants' in Midnapore.

According to the forest officials and experts, this is shocking an incident because elephants do not attack humans while in a herd but wild elephants do.

"Apart from 70 elephants, 15-16 calves were also there. When the woman reached the jungle, on seeing her the elephants got scared about the security of the calves and attacked the woman," said officials.

WWF's Dr. Ashley Brooks said, "We can only find a proper solution to this after identifying the issue of the area."
