Concern over growth of juliflora at Thathaneri cremation ground; it will be removed soon: civic chief

The dense growth of juliflora (seemai karuvelam) has led to several anti-social elements prowling the Thathaneri cremation ground at night, according to workers.

An undertaker, seeking anonymity, said a large number of young boys were often spotted near the cremation ground around night time.

“We see fresh bottles of liquor and cigarette butts every morning. Many youngsters also seek the thrill of visiting the cremation grounds at night and usually hide behind the bushes to prove their bravado. This is a major cause of concern for us,” he said.

The cremation ground was spruced up by the Corporation years ago. “We are in-charge of the general cleanliness of the crematorium. However, the plants and large mounds of concrete and sand can only be removed if an earthmover is used. We have tried approaching officials but have not received positive response,” he added.

V.P. Manigandam, a volunteer who helps with conducting the last rites of the elderly, said the Corporation ought to treat the final resting place with more sensitivity. Also, many crematoriums in the State were cleaner and quieter.

“The juliflora can be a great cover for criminals. Both the burial ground and the sheds need to be maintained properly. If the grass is trimmed regularly, then visitors can pay their last respects and leave,” he felt.

Corporation Commissioner S. Aneesh Sekhar said the civic body was in touch with local organisations such as the Rotary Club who have taken interest in maintaining the ground. “We are working out designs and details, which should be ready in about two weeks. The crematorium is set to be modernised.”

The civic body chief added that the Corporation undertook cleaning of the invasive plants about four months ago. Newly cropped up shrubs would be removed soon.
