After Twinkle Khanna, it's Shweta Bachchan Nanda's turn to dazzle the literary scene in India! Shweta is all set to make her debut as a fiction author with her first novel, Paradise Towers. She recently revealed the cover of her book to be published by HarperCollins India.
Karan Johar, Zoya Akhtar and other B-town celebrities took to social media and wished Shweta good luck for her new literary endeavour. Paradise Towers will be launched a day before her father superstar
Amitabh Bachchan's birthday, on
October 11.
Shweta Bachchan Nanda's debut novel talks about everyday lives of simple men and women, set in a Mumbai apartment. HarperCollins has billed
Paradise Towers as a "quirky, intimate debut that explores the intertwined lives in the building - a forbidden romance, an elopement, the undercurrents of tension in corridor interactions and an explosive Diwali celebration".
Shweta explains how she came to conceive the idea of
Paradise Towers. She said, "I grew up with my grandfather who was a poet and a writer. Writing and reading was always a very important part of our lives. I've been writing a diary ever since I was a little girl, and wrote stories that I never shared with anyone." The writer continued, "Then, one day I just said, I am going to take this plunge. I started writing a column for a newspaper in Mumbai and it gave me a lot of confidence to go ahead and do this full time, and that's where
Paradise Towers comes from."
A press release by HarperCollins states, "At the Paradise Towers in central Mumbai, everyone has a story to tell or maybe stories to hide." The book follows the different lives of different people and presents to us an intriguing mix of tales, told through one story. There's Lata the enchantress, observed carefully by Dinesh, carrying a hot plate of dessert that becomes a subject of interest to many. Then there's the inquisitive Mrs Mody on the first floor who relentlessly spies on the guard, and the newcomers, The Singhs and their four boys with the SUV.
Celebrated Bollywood producer and filmmaker
Karan Johar tweeted the book to be "observant, moving, hilarious and exceptionally astute".
Shreya Punj, Assistant Editor at HarperCollins India, believes that
Paradise Towers is a fresh, insightful story that will resonate with all. "I fell in love with the story when I first read it. Now,
Paradise Towers is ready to meet its readers, and I cannot wait for people to fall in love with this quirky, intimate world Shweta has created," she says.
