HYDERABAD: An under-construction property on Banjara Hills Road No 12 has turned into a major mosquito breeding spot, resulting in the spread of mosquito borne diseases, especially dengue, in the upmarket locality, locals alleged.

Water has accumulated in a 30-ft deep hole that was dug on the site, turning it into a pond, said locals. Over 1000 individual houses are in close vicinity of the pit apart from many showrooms and shops.

“The site is a disputed one and from what we understand there is a stay on any further construction. So, the pit, which has now turned into a pond, is likely to remain so for two to three years. Under the circumstances, GHMC authorities should take some measures like releasing gambusia fish in the pond,” said Dr Manish Gupta, adding that his son has been diagnosed with dengue some days back.

Residents of the area said the rainwater, which has been stagnant in the pit for almost two months now, has made it difficult for locals to keep their doors and windows open, even for a while.

“After the first few showers of rain in the area, water accumulated in the pit, breeding millions of mosquitoes. We have come across three to four cases of dengue in the last few days alone,” said Muralidhar Gupta, a resident of the area.

While locals had been contacting Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) and a round of fumigation was taken up, the posh locality still reels from incessant mosquito attacks through the day. “While there are mosquitoes throughout the day, the situation is particularly bad in the evenings. We are not able to stand in the open even for five minutes,” he added.

The pit-turned-mosquito breeding spot has now become such a menace that even the usual precautions like use of mosquito repellents, mosquito nets, wearing full sleeved clothes and upscaling sanitation in the area has not been of any help.
