Alice Wells, Principal Deputy Assistant of State for South and Central Asia, said conversations on counterterrorism had always been always a very important part of the US-relationship and the two countries have been coordinating on terrorist designations.

"I would hope that the choice is what was attributed to a of Army Staff, (Qamar Javed) Bajwa who said as long as there are extremists non-state forces operating in Pakistan; can't be a normal state," Wells said.

"It is tackling that core issue that's going to be so critical both to the quality of our bilateral relationship but also to the prospects for better relations between and Pakistan," she said.
