Manipur's medicinal black rice to be sown in UP soon

BHADOHI: Manipur's black rice, known for its medicinal properties, will soon be sown in Uttar Pradesh.

Anil Singh, a resident of Suriyawan Block, is the first farmer to cultivate it.

The farmer said that he has not used any kind of chemical fertilizer in the paddy field and the farming is entirely based on an organic method.

He also said that he experimented on a small portion of land.

Black rice, known as chak-hao in Manipur, is a source of iron, vitamin E and antioxidants. The outermost layer of the rice contains one of the highest levels of anthocyanins. It is known for curing diabetes and cancer.

Recently, chief minister Yogi Adityanath had advised farmers of western Uttar Pradesh to grow less sugarcane keeping in view increasing number of sugar patients in the state.

On this advice, Anil Singh from Bhadohi sent a suggestion to the CM to produce Manipur's black rice in the state as it will not only control the diabetes but will also help in increasing farmer's income manyfold.

The black rice is sold in the market from Rs 250 to Rs 500 per kg.

Deputy Agriculture Director, Bhadohi district, Arvind Kumar Singh said that for the first time Agriculture Department has started cultivating Manipur black rice.
