The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on Tuesday heard two separate public interest litigation petitions filed against stone and sand quarrying operations. The petitioners sought a restraint against quarrying operations in Nilakottai in Dindigul district and Manapparai in Tiruchi district.
Taking up the petitions for hearing, a Division Bench of Justices M.M. Sundresh and N. Sathish Kumar directed the Dindigul District Assistant Director of Mines and Minerals to ascertain the extent of stone quarrying in Nilakottai and file a report.
Similarly, the court directed notice to the Tiruchi district authorities on the plea filed against sand quarrying in Manapparai. The quarrying operations had caused environmental problems in the respective regions, the petitioners said.
