Tiverton High gets the Week 1 heart-stoppage award, winning at Narragansett in overtime.

Junior running back Nate Upchurch ran for 200-plus yards and four touchdowns while junior quarterback Matt Gacioch rushed for 75 yards and two touchdowns.

Seniors Dan Garde and Logan Beattie were game-long forces on special teams, and there were a lot of kickoffs in this one.

While the defense struggled for much of the game, the Tigers came through with a game-clinching goal-line stand in overtime, stopping the Mariners at the 1 on third and fourth downs.

• Case High wasn’t just successful. The Cardinals were entertaining. Putting up 42 points helps keep the fans peppy. And the Cardinals did it without senior running back Chris Costa (hand injury).

“It was a good start to the season,” Case coach Anthony Palladino wrote in a text. “Definitely have lots of things to clean up, but I like the intensity and passion we had on Friday. We will need to play better and cleaner to beat a good and athletic Diman team (this Friday in Fall River).

“We must be a better road team this year and Diman is a tough place to play.”

Costa, a 2017 Herald News all- scholastic, remains questionable for this week’s game, Palladino texted.

• In the loss to Somerset Berkley, Durfee senior Lucas Roque made 11 tackles. … Teammate Yann Rosa made a big-time special teams play in the first quarter, diving to keep a Durfee punt out of the SBR end zone and starting a virtual game-long run of terrible field position for the Raiders. Rosa‘s play was one of those you often see the pros and college players fail to make.

“I’m very proud of the effort,” Durfee coach Taylor Brown said. “I thought physically we put it to them and I can’t ask for much more than that. We had an opportunity at the end of the football to win it. We didn’t. They came up with a play they needed to make. That’s the way football works.”

Thwarted by Durfee’s defense for most of the game, SBR came through with a 96-yard touchdown drive late. That drive, highlighted by Michael Gagliardi's 56-yard gain on a screen pass, accounted for almost half of the Raiders’ 203 total yards. SBR’s defense played a huge role, holding Durfee to 88 total yards (all rushing). That kind of effort was imperative because Durfee enjoyed some good field position (four possessions starting near midfield).

• In Stang’s high-scoring win over Seekonk, Justin Lopes rushed for two touchdowns.

• Diman's J.C. King rushed for 167 yards on 19 carries.
