The Delhi Police have failed to make a significant headway in the case of murder of a cab driver, who was shot dead by a three men in south Delhi’s Kotla Mubarakpur on Sunday morning.
‘Eyewitness was drunk’
The police said that the sole eyewitness to the murder, who was with the deceased during the incident, was heavily drunk at that time, adding that he also kept on changing his statements.
“Hemant, a friend of deceased Umesh Sharma, was sitting next to him in the cab when the incident happened. He was the one who took the injured to the hospital. He was called for questioning but he kept on changing his statements,” said a police officer.
The officer said that on the basis of the CCTV footage, they have identified a car and several suspects, but Hemant failed to identify any of those.
“We have got several CCTV footage of the car but most of them are blurred and the car’s registration number is not clear. The car was last seen in Defence Colony,” the officer said.
“Several police teams are working on the case. We have rounded up more than 30 people for questioning. We have also got certain clues about the suspects,” he said.
Hemant told the police that he and Umesh met at 8.15 p.m. They had parked the car in a narrow lane in Kotla Mubarakpur main market and were chatting, when they got into an argument with three men in a car over the passage and as the side mirrors of the cars brushed passed each other.
He said a man sitting in the rear seat of the car came out and shot Umesh in the chest and fled.
The police said Umesh was shot in the chest from a close range.
Umesh, 40, a resident of Sangam Vihar is survived by his wife and three children.
